New Community Services at Kingsway
Created by pss.badhamI would like to update the local residents of what is going on at the Local Centre in Kingsway.
Badham Pharmacy is opening a pharmacy here near the School on the 1st March, this will be in a portacabin for a few months.
We will move to one of the new shops that are being built there in June/July.
Five units are being built of which Tesco will have one; this will be a Tesco Express.
Badham Pharmacy are looking for tenants for the other units, and we are in discussions with a dentist, doctor, optican and take-away.
I will keep you informed of how we get on as I am sure you are all very keen to see local services looking after the growing population in Kingsway.
Badham Pharmacy are based in Cheltenham and have branches in Churchdown and Gloucester, we are a family company which has been providing services for over 70 years.
We are very excited about the new venture, we like to work with the community in which we have pharmacies. We see us coming to the local centre as the first step in getting this off the ground.
Please visit the Badham Pharmacy website for more information about us, including a map and directions to our new Kingsway Pharmacy.
Please give me a call if you want to know anything else:

Hi Peter,
Thank you very much for joining us and writing this post.
I did get your message on my ansafone last week; sadly I couldn’t make out the telephone number and I mistook your name for “Barham”, so was unable to locate you online (so much for digital voice recording - lol)!
After more than 4 years with no local facilities, I’m sure we’re all very keen to see the shopping centre opened.
Good luck with your venture and welcome to Kingsway

It’s fantastic a small pharmacy chain that is family owned is opening in Kingsway, this will give more of a village feel. on another note, I think it’s disgusting that Tesco are opening a Tesco Express here when just around the corner they have a massive Tesco; why isn’t a smaller company like the Co-op opening here, is there anything we can do about it or is it too late?
February 13th, 2011 at 11:24 pm
G Note
I echo yours, and Clive’s comments about having such a pharmacy company here
With regard to Tesco - I did do a lot of enquiries when I found out, but in essence Tesco were the only ones to bid therefore there is nothing we can do. You are by far not the only person to be less than impressed, but with no other companies wanting to take part, we are stuck.

Based on the number of take-away leaflets I get each week, I will happily bet a fiver that at least 2 if not more of the units will be take-aways…
I will bet on a Chippy, and a Chinese.

Mclovin
You are probably right, ‘though it would be nice for a cafe or a deli instead of two takeaways. As for Tescos, I don’t bother much with the Tescos in Quedgeley, so I shan’t be dashing to Tesco Express either, even if it means having no milk for my cornflakes!
G Note: “this will give more of a village feel”: the largest housing estate in Gloucester more like; ‘Village’ was/is just a selling point from the house builders and QUVL.
Anyhow, I wish all the best to the shop tenants, at least it’s the start of a few facilities. Three cheers for Badhams…hip, hip, hooray.
February 14th, 2011 at 10:09 pm
I have spoken to Peter and he has kindly agreed to come to the next public meeting (22nd Feb) to meet residents, tell us a bit about his plans, and also to get some feedback from us as to what other things we would like to see.
Good to see the first business willing to be so proactive, hopefully he will set the standards for others to follow.
February 15th, 2011 at 8:22 am
Do the local community have any actual say in which shops they would like in the area?
I would hate to see a selection of betting shops and takeaways etc.
It is also a shame that we are getting a Tesco Express, as opposed to a local independant retailer. Unfortunately the Tesco will stock the same items as the supermarket (although a little limited) but at higher prices.
February 15th, 2011 at 10:29 pm
Hi All
Why is it when Tesco says “jump”, the powers that be jump! I totally agree with Mclovin and others with their views on Tesco, surely there is something that can be done?
I was reading somewhere on a web site about the Kingsway development (can`t remember where now) that there’s meant to have been a 900sq metre Sainsbury’s over on the business area so I take it that now Tesco are on here this means that they have a hold on the whole area now so that no other supermarket or food store can move onto this development, as this is something that they have been known to do in a bid to stop joe public having a choice in where and how they shop.
Yeah it would be really good to have a cafe or deli among the shop development but I expect Tesco wouldn’t like a shop like this in the shop development.
February 16th, 2011 at 9:58 am
Following on with others… I agree that Tesco has far too much of a strangle-hold over Gloucester in general, beyond many other towns too, it seems as town centre’s become ghost-towns from local shops being squeezed out of the market place. They know who’s more likely to give them the go-ahead politically in council’s when it comes to planning permission or taking-over from stores they pushed out via their bigger superstores, and they make sure they get what they want when giving their support to those political party’s in return!
Philip Clarke is the new Tesco CEO, replacing Sir Terry Leahy - why don’t those in the community voice their frustrations in his direction so that we show him what we (the people) think about their restriction of competition in the area.

I think it’s great that things are starting to take shape!
And really welcome the new pharmacist!
I agree with everyone else’s comments here in that having a Tesco Express so close to the other Tesco is absolutely pointless, my neighbours and I were keeping our fingers crossed for a CO-OP
Barry, maybe you could share any other information about other facilities there might be in Kingsway in the future?

February 16th, 2011 at 2:40 pm
Just to let you all know, I have sent an email to the mid counties co-operative to see if they are interested and if anything can be done. I do not believe that Tesco were the only ones interested as I too was told that Sainsbury’s would be moving here and that was a done deal. I would rather see nothing than another Tesco, can we all sign a petition or something?
February 16th, 2011 at 7:04 pm
Good evening all,
Perhaps we could all send e-mails to other store HQ’s and make it plain that we’re fed up with Tesco and how we like them to consider us in their forth coming plans.
I’m sorry I forgot to welcome Badham Pharmacies to Kingsway, I’m looking forward to using their facilities as a regular medication user (in the long term illness term) I’ll no doubt be a regular visitor.
I must say that we have to use this pharmacy as it makes a change to have a family run business move into an area these days.
Good luck Badham Parmacies with your new venture.
February 16th, 2011 at 7:46 pm
G Note - I would be really interested to hear what reply you get as I emailed ’round a lot of the companies at the beginning of last year to see what their position was, the main response was that it was not in their 5 year plan. Only two had really thought about it and not taken it further.
Em - The only other one I have heard about it Taylors Estate Agents having a unit.
But…
Peter Badham will be coming to the next public meeting (Next Tuesday) and he has bought 4 other units and will be asking us what sort of things we would like to see (IE Who should he lease to), so come and tell him!
February 16th, 2011 at 7:48 pm
Kevgee - Not sure about the Sainsbury’s angle, it was my understanding that they were considering the local centre, but declined to bid.
The Business Park is under the remit of Robert Hitchins, and they keep everything very close to their chest.
February 16th, 2011 at 7:59 pm
Out of interest, why is everyone so against Tesco? Just because there is one not too far up the road, what difference does it make that our ‘local’ shop is a small Tesco? They’d offer the same products as a Sainsburys or Co-operative surely?
It would be nice to have an independent local store, but are there really any of those left? The news and high streets are riddled with independent stores that are going out of business because they just can’t compete with the likes of Co-op, Tesco etc. Having one here, with all the will in the world will probably not work because the cheaper tesco and Aldi stores would draw people to use them rather than the more expensive local shop.
I’m not saying I want a Tesco - I shop in Sainsburys - the shopping experience is nicer, in my opinion! But that’s my personal preference on what store I like. Just emailing other store HQ’s to say that we’re fed up is fine, but fed up with what exactly? If it’s their poor customer service, opening hours, trolleys / rubbish they leave around, then fine, that’s a route to go down, but I don’t think we’ll get anything changed unless there are specific reasons - and just because there is one up the road (1.4miles walking and going via the underpass according to google maps), won’t get us far.
February 17th, 2011 at 9:31 am
Thank you all for your supportive comments re our new pharmacy, what a wonderful welcome, thank you all very much!
We are really looking forward to offering the best service we can and working with the community to build up the local centre
As a company we are very lucky to have great staff, Last year the company won “family business of year award ” in the Gloucestershire media business awards , because of the execllent staff we have and that we go the extra mile
Thank you for the invitation to the meeting next Tuesday, I will be very interested in learning what services you would like us to offer, and to discuss what other users you feel would be good for Kingsway in the other units.
See you all next week,
Peter

Hi everyone,
It seems as though everyone is concerned with Tesco’s being the only applicant, has any one ever though about dentists or a doctors? I had to wait 9 days to get an appointment at the Severn Vale surgery; is there any way we could get a doctors surgery and ease the pressure on Severn Vale?
Uxbridge Couple.
February 17th, 2011 at 7:12 pm
Welcome for the new pharmacy.
I too am disappointed at the news that there will be a Tesco’s Express here in the new units, I was kind of hoping for someone else to challenge Tesco on their monopoly of the market.
A coffee shop or a butchers would be a good idea or maybe even a newsagents seeing as MColls was swallowed up during the recent refurbishment of Tesco’s, there are days after the school run when I could just do with popping into a shop like that for the kids sweets instead of having to go Tescos and ending up spending a fortune later on stuff I didn’t really need.
Will there be parking outside these shops as well, as I live the other side of Kingsway (Woodvale/Holbeach) my little ones might not appreciate the walk?
February 17th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
I too disagree with having a Tesco Express, their prices are far higher than the bigger stores. And as we are an up and coming village, Tesco will not stock for our needs. I feel sorry for the residents who are unable to drive or the elderly who will pay higher prices for their weekly shop, just for the convenience of having a Tesco Express. It would have been better if Tesco had some competition.
What is happening about a Post Office, as visiting Hardwick PO is quiet a trek if you don’t drive?
February 17th, 2011 at 11:16 pm
Mitzi,
According to the note on the door at the proposed Post Office Unit it should be opening on the 1st March so fingers crossed. I visited Hardwicke PO yesterday at 16.00 and it was a nightmare for parking as well as waiting time, so roll on the opening of the Quedgeley Post Office!
February 17th, 2011 at 11:29 pm
UxbridgeCouple - Thanks for your comments, your right and the whole local center has 15 units. So there will be other things.
The doctors surgery is very high on my list because of that problem. We are talking to the PCT about it and if they hold to their promises then there should be a specific Doctors Surgery provision. Before last May, we had one of the Health Ministers here and were pushing the situation hard, but that “timed out” with the election.
Lou Lou - yes there is parking, in fact it is there now already, ‘though not completed.
And yes, my latest is that the PO is due to open 1st March, so we will see.
February 18th, 2011 at 1:38 pm
Under the New Government plans, PCT’s are going to be abolished. PCT’s are the Bodies which build and plan for Doctors surgeries. So when the PCT is gone what happens then?
February 18th, 2011 at 5:52 pm
I too agree about Tescos - it should either be a local, independently run corner shop or failing that, an ethically minded retailer such as Co-Op. I’m disappointed that no other retailers seem to be taking an interest. Am I the only one that thinks the layout of Kingsway is a little odd? I live on a bollarded section of Valley Gardens and not only is receiving deliveries a nightmare, it doesn’t stop motorbikes/scooters and dappy motorists racing down the section of road… right outside the primary school. I hope something is done before a child is injured.
February 18th, 2011 at 6:07 pm
I’m happy with Tesco, don’t see it as a problem.
February 18th, 2011 at 8:49 pm
Haydn, I agree with you about the bollard area, I think there was some bad planning going on here. the problem is the Children are getting complacent with no traffic using this, so when they do eventually decide to use this as a bus route the children are going to have a big shock coming to them (or should I say the parents are), but I do understand that Mrs Needham does try to drum it into them that they should use this area as if it was a proper road.
February 19th, 2011 at 1:01 pm
Clive,
Please would you respond to my email with regard to my request for clarity relating too my attempt toward adding a comment within this thread. I note that many others have had their comments released without restriction but my own appear delayed or (as in this case) restricted from access. The comment made includes nothing different from others who respond toward the concerns surrounding Tesco? I did provide the wider community with the email address for the new CEO of Tesco’s in order for them to forward their concerns to him personally. I have previously provided in numerous other inclusions - email addresses or telephone numbers of those which the wider community may wish to use for their ability to contact persons which can provide them with assistance toward such matters. Therefore, doing the same again shouldn’t require your need for blocking my comment?
I would be grateful for a response please.
February 19th, 2011 at 1:03 pm
I understand completely that you are an extremely busy man, and any delays are not something you would prefer.
Apologises if my previous comment sounded unhelpful Clive.
February 19th, 2011 at 8:10 pm
Hi Steve,
I cleared all my emails on Monday because I had a large project to work on for a few days… I was intending to catch up on Friday, but was struck down with some sort of (horrible) sickness bug and have only just got out of bed
Your comment was held automatically: Web-links (including emails) and swear-words cause any comments to be held for moderation; the reason why you don’t often see delays is because I’m usually very quick to release them!
My apologies for the delay, the comment is now added.
February 21st, 2011 at 1:54 pm
Hi Peter,
Firstly thank you for bringing some local business to the village. In these fairly tough times it would be very easy for you to push back to a national chain to fill the empty units.
I’d like to ask you and Barry, considering that Kingsway is primarily a commuter village, is there going to be a push for the tenants occupying these units to open later? Whilst I appreciate that there will hopefully be plenty of trade using these facilities during the day, if these services are not available outside of standard working hours then they are not only ostracizing a large proportion of the community but also setting themselves up for failure.
Paul

Hi Neighbours,
The Post Office have recently confirmed that the Quedgeley Post Office will re-open on March 1st (See here).
Mitzi - With Post Offices closing all over the UK I can’t see much chance of another local one opening
My wife quite often stops at the Tesco Express on the Bristol Road to pick up bits and pieces on her way home from work, and she tells me that their prices are the same as the main store for “everyday items”, (‘though they often have less choice and many of their cheaper brands aren’t available there)!
Personally, I too would have liked somebody new, (of course it would be nice to have a little more local choice).
Over the past 4 years I’ve heard rumours ranging from Sainsbury to Morrison… but - since nobody else is interested, I guess we’re lucky to have anything at all!
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:37 am
Hi all,
Just to let you know that it seems that the Post Office is being delayed AGAIN…
Latest guess is Easter!
Barry
February 22nd, 2011 at 2:09 pm
Delays… at The Post Office?
Whatever next!
February 23rd, 2011 at 10:32 am
Would have been nice for another company apart from Tesco’s since we have a big store close by anyway, I for one will not be using the express store due to limited choice and usually slightly higher prices or offers not available.
Lived here for years now with no local shops so not going to make much of a difference tbh, if the shops are not any good will carry on like we have had too when we had no choice.
February 23rd, 2011 at 7:02 pm
On behalf of the team from Badham Pharmacy , can I thank all of the residents who came to the meeting last night . We had a great welcome and the feedback was very hepful.
I will keep you posted on any progress I make regarding a doctors surgery, it has got to happen!
With the Post Office , as this seems to be a serious issue, why cannot this be in our pharmacy when it opens in June?
I am sure we can adjust our layout to suit
Who can I contact to discuss this?
I have been speaking to a bakers today who also runs coffee shops, to see if he might want a unit.
Thank you once again
Peter

Hi Peter,
That’s good news, as I’m hoping to start my own business in making celebration cakes and I’m starting a patisserie chef course later this year, so I’m hoping that this baker would be a benefit to me, and we’d be able to help each other? But that may be something we’d have to speak about another time.
Regards,
Kev

Dear All
I am delighted to say that we are ready to open on Tuesday 1st March at our new pharmacy in Kingsway
Please call in and see Hanna / Michelle / Jeannine / Paul or myself…
We will be offering free drinks etc for you all!

Hi Peter,
It was good to meet you all last week. Thank you for coming to the meeting and giving us all so much information.
Sorry I haven’t posted my meeting summary yet (see here for why)!
Good luck
March 2nd, 2011 at 11:03 am
Kev,
I also make cakes. I have no formal qualifications but I have been doing cakes for about 10 years! Maybe we can come to an agreement with the Bakery or something like that to be able to produce our cake there instead of in our kitchens!
Any ideas you get please let me know. Please don’t think of me as competition as this is just a hobby!

uxbridgecouple,
I to would like to see a surgery and dentist here.
I tried to make a appointment to see a GP, to ask (being a new patient) if he/she needs to follow up my medical history for follow-up checks, and I was told that the GP’s in Quedgeley do not offer this service, so I have to ask for an appointment and ask the GP to follow up my notes.
My daugher has been here over 18 months and has just had a new baby, but has never been seen by a GP. Her own older child has underlying physical problems, and her husband has heart problems and wears a heart monitor. But as she has said when she tries to arrange an appointment to see a GP, the receptionist asks “what’s the problem” and gets the nurse to ‘phone back, only to say that a GP appointment is not needed!
So can anyone recommend a GP surgery, that takes an interest in their patients, as I am not impressed with these Surgeries in Quedgeley?
I wish I could have stayed with my own family GP.
March 11th, 2011 at 10:22 pm
Hi mitzi1960,
AS far as i understand Mr Badham is looking into getting a Doctor/Dentist into one of the units if my memory is correct. I don’t think the Dentist will be an NHS Dentist which is a shame as there doesn’t seem to be many NHS Dentists here in Gloucester.
The doctor’s surgery we use is Quedgeley Medical Centre. We’ve been here for a year and we’ve had no problems with them, in fact they have been very helpful with getting hospital appointments and such like.
Regards,
Kevgee
March 11th, 2011 at 10:38 pm
Hi Emma,
There’s no problem, we could probably help each other out as time goes on.
I’m doing an “abc in cake decoration course” @ gloscol and I’m gaining experience by doing a few competitons through the year as well. Then in September I’m hopefully doing a Patisserie Chef Diploma course, so we may be of help to each other sometimes.
Happy baking,
Kevgee
March 14th, 2011 at 2:54 pm
The doctors surgeries over in Quedgeley are pretty poor really, and clearly unable to cope with the large numbers of patients they seem to have.
It might also help if the doctors actually turned up on time. I had an appointment last year at about 7:30 in the morning. I was the first there and the doc’ didn’t show up until 20 minutes later, then looked a bit surprised that I demanded an apology!
March 21st, 2011 at 12:57 am
I popped into the Pharmacy on Friday to get my prescribed medication. It took the ladies there all of 2 minutes to prepare; a great improvement on the 1 hour wait I usually have
I was pleasantly surprised to see the range of non-medicines on offer. They have a small range of essential household items (washing-up liquid, toilet rolls, cleaning products, dog poo bags etc) on sale at very reasonable prices.
They also sell sweets, milk and postage stamps.
Congratulations Mr Badham on the start of your business here in Kingsway. Thank you for providing items other than the usual pharmacy stock.
Would it be worth you leaving a list of items you sell on here? I know I’d check to see if you stock it, in the hope that I will not need to go elsewhere.
Spread the word everyone to support this valuable facility

I’m happy for the new development with the Tesco and Pharmacy.
When will it be completed, and can anyone tell me where I can apply for a job to work at the Tesco?
Thanks.
April 1st, 2011 at 3:19 pm
Folks, Don’t forget that Badhams Chemist has its opening tomorrow, 11am.
Lets show our support for our first local amenity
Cheers,
Barry
April 1st, 2011 at 5:49 pm
Hi Peter,
I removed your post about the opening ceremony, because it’s essentially a duplicate of your post on the subject, which was added (approved) on March 22nd and is linked above (and from Barry’s post).
Perhaps you missed the fact that I added it… (sorry for the delay, the reason for which is explained here)!
Re your list of items/prices: I’m sorry to be such a killjoy, but…
Whilst I’m happy to post news about the new shopping facilities (in fact I was going to ask you to consider displaying a small advertisement for the blog in return for the free publicity), I can’t allow free advertising when other local businesses are paying for it (see my advertising page for details, and please note that a percentage of our advertising revenue is donated directly to the Kingsway Residents Association)…
I do hope you understand my position.
Having said that, I hope that Kingsway residents support our new local pharmacy, and good luck with your opening ceremony
April 2nd, 2011 at 10:27 am
Clive,
Your fairness has been very clearly noted over these past couple of months from the extensive free promotional advertising of one company throughout the blog, and your need of indicating how other business who advertise with you wouldn’t equally have had such wide extensive free promotional ability is a point which needs to be taken into account. I am sure those paid advertising were not entirely pleased that their money was allowing one company to have free access to the same services as them. Perhaps that company should now consider offering a donation to the KRA for all the free access it’s taken advantage from?
The website is a very important and helpful tool for the community, and it doesn’t operate for free from all your hard work in keeping it available for the community. Sadly, those taking advantage of your website in this way presumably felt they had the ultimate angle from being within Kingsway, and equally having a fellow Parish Council for support too!
May 6th, 2011 at 12:28 pm
Good Morning All,
I was just wondering if the rules about not being able to start work before 8 am applies to Barnwood construction?
As I was awoken by their operatives manouvering dumpers and earth-moving equipment around the development at 7.30 this morning!
I have also noticed delivery trucks arriving on site to deliver to developers before the 8am start time since the new road has been opened, clearly passing signs notifying them that no delivery vehicle is to enter the development before 8am.
Why can’t the developers inform the companies they order from that they cannot and won’t be unloaded until after 8 and that there is no reason to arrive before this time? Or am I being too organised and caring for the community?
May 6th, 2011 at 5:34 pm
Kevgee - Report them to the council, it is their responsibility to start at the appropriate time, and inform their subcontractors and deliveries accordingly.
Barry
May 10th, 2011 at 8:05 am
Good Morning KEVGEE,
The rules apply to any contractor on this development with regard to start time being 0800hrs. Report them to: [email protected] within Gloucester City Council’s Planning Department. Mr Birchley is very firm when it comes to this continued problem on this development via contractors, he even obtained a prosecution last year when Taylor Wimpey were ignoring the rules too.
I would also encourage you to note if they have signage for Considerate Constructors Scheme, if so, then equally report them to: [email protected], he is responsible for taking action within that organisation if they breach the same rules too.
May 13th, 2011 at 10:13 pm
blastu2 sorry I’m just getting back to you, thank you for the contacts they’ll be a great help.
Barry just to let you know I did call the council about the builders and as yet I’ve had no contact from them but thanks to blastu2 I can now get straight to the organ grinder and get things sorted.
May 14th, 2011 at 9:35 am
KevGee - Cool, and thanks to Steve for putting them up.
It’s also worth highlighting that Cllr Fred Wood had also picked up on your post and contacted Andy Birchley with your issue as well.
May 17th, 2011 at 9:06 am
Morning each,
Youre very welcome. KevGee… if you have any difficulties, just get in touch and I would be happy to assist in any way I can too. I would equally suggest taking digital pictures of any work being carried-out before 0800hrs, and/or after their official end time - most on the development are expected to finish at 1800hrs, some do have an extended time of 1900hrs but that would need clarifying by the Council as to which site has what finish time. I noted some sites on the development were placing Considerate Constructors Scheme signage up but officially weren’t part of the scheme - again, check-out any signage and get their site’s confirmed with Mr David Crook, if they are found not to be part of the scheme but have placed signage up - they can be fined beyond being forced to take down the signs.

Local Amenities
Does anyone have any more information about what shops/services are being built by/behind the Primary School and when they may be opening?
I have heard/read many conflicting opinions and am getting a bit confused.

New Kingsway local Centre Update
I am delighted to inform your readers that we have completed on the 4 new shops at Kingsway.
The Pharmacy will open on the 1st September in the shop.
We are looking forward to a great future in Kingsway.
July 26th, 2011 at 1:43 pm
Re delighted, a Tesco Express, myself I would have prerred a local Sainsburys, but hey they run a great corner shop. BUT a chemist, a Taylors estate agency will not add or turn this area into the village status it advertises. Chemists locally you can find near doctors surgeries and in major supermarkets. Would be nice to have a great fish ‘n chip shop or bakery or the like. Not ten a penny outlets that offer nothing we can’t get anywhere. This area will only be a suburb of Gloucester, will never reach the feel of a true village. Just in case you all think I am anti Kingsway I am not. We are both happy here and like the area and it’s local position, but and another BUT, only because we were happy with where our house is situated, the style, plus the price we got it for. Our sellers lost 22% in just a few years, never even had a nice road ouside; they lost faith, the constant broken promises. Can’t even get a tarmac piece of road. Never ending construction which shakes the house constantly… I will never big up the area just so others can clear their negative equity n move away. My opinion on the Kingsway suburb of Gloucester: It’s really nice, but only at the correct price. A village it certainly won’t ever be.
